Seminoles Win, Despite Being Outplayed – Again – and That’s Good Enough for Now

A win is a win and FSU fans at this point in this season are grateful to be able to check the left side of the win- loss column. The Seminoles were again outplayed, rescued only by last minute heroics to overcome defeat at the hands of a terrible Louisville team.

If you’ve seen one FSU game you’ve seen them all. The one exception against Louisville wast that the team didn’t quit. That’s at least one thing they’ve got going for them.

The frustrating aspect of this team is an overall lack of consistency in making plays; discipline remains a problem. While FSU improved slightly in that department, it continues to be annoying to see false starts and alignment issues four games into the season.

Offensively, Deondre Francois’ stats don’t tell what actually happened. Just under 300 yards passing with four touchdowns and no interceptions is enough to make casual fans happy. Actually watching the game, an observer couldn’t understand how the number wasn’t bigger. No matter how the national media wants to paint a narrative that he doesn’t have time to throw behind a terrible line, this game, FSU’s offensive line gave up zero sacks. There’s a lack of consistent vertical pressure on opposing defenses from this offense and that will have to change. That’s what this team does better than many will give them credit for.

I liked seeing a moving screen that took advantage of FSU’s athletic ability at wide receiver. That was refreshing.

The running game remains non-existent and just looks so much harder in this system. Fans asked for more of a power look, and you could see it with the motioning of a tight end to kick out the defensive end and a guard pulling up inside (Power G! OMG, it’s so sexy to see), but running out of the shotgun gun is difficult and largely takes the downhill run game away.

Eventually, FSU’s coaching staff has to look at what Clemson does with running back Travis Ettiene; that’s the model.
